Parents and guardians,
I hope students were able to relax over February break. On the Friday before break, students took a quiz on perimeter and area. This quiz involved many multi-step problems and required the memorization of two formulas. The quiz scores ranged from 10% to 100% with the average score being 62%. The low average and the handful of extremely low scores has led me to change my plan for this week. Here is what we are going to do:
1. Today (Monday) students had to take an unrelated assessment that is used in teacher evaluations. This does not count toward their grade at all. It is just something we have to do.
2. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week we will again review the material found on the quiz. I will give extension and enrichment exercises to those who scored 80% or better.
3. On Friday, all students will have the opportunity to take a "retake" quiz in class - a chance to do better and replace their original score.
What you can do at home: Part of your child's homework tonight is to get a parent or guardian signature on his or her quiz. Please sign your child's quiz and let them know that you now know the plan for this week. I told them all I would send this update out today.
I will be after school only on Thursday of this week due to meetings. This makes our class time this week all the more important. I hope students take advantage of this second chance and come to class prepared and ready to work.
Thank you for your support at home. Please let me know if you have any questions about your child's score. As always, scores are also on Edmodo.
Below are a few pictures taken before break.
